Breviário do Brasil (2017)

6x slideshows, 6x screens, TV with still image
installation on the circular room of Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade, São Paulo, Brazil

original idea by João Sousa Cardoso
in collaboration with Catarina Oliveira

Invited by the artist João Sousa Cardoso, this site-specific installation is the result of a week-long photography workshop with 25 participants. They gathered images reflecting on post-impeachment Brazil, its political violence, and censorship. The slideshows arise from the analysis and reenactment of archival footage, as well as several photographic sessions in the Bom Retiro neighbourhood, marked by Jewish emigration during WWII and, more recently, by Korean and Bolivian emigration. Connections between the slideshows are created through a variety of screens and fragmented images, surrounding the visitor.
