Act V, Scene I (2014)
installation, single slide projection, stage and chair
group exhibition Figuras do Novo Império, abandoned office building, downtown Porto, Portugal
Exploring the cinema and theater apparatus, the virtual image of an audience—projected as a single slide—depicts the artists of the exhibition sitting and watching, with the exception of this piece’s author. This virtual audience faces an empty stage, where the sentence Il cinema è un’invenzione senza avvenire (Cinema is an invention without a future) is written. The quote is taken from Jean-Luc Godard’s film Le Mépris, where it appears inscribed on the wall of a screening room beneath the screen.
A chair is positioned to invite the audience to sit, their backs turned to the artists, encouraging them to experience an invisible show: the empty stage and the impossibility of seeing, blinded by the light.
